Began broadcasting in India in 1927 with the proliferation of private radio clubs. Started All India Radio officially in 1936, as a non-governmental organization, with clear objectives for information, education and entertainment for the masses.
When India gained independence in 1947, AIR has a network of six centers complement of 18 transmitters. The percentage of coverage of the surface of 2.5% and 11% of the population. Took a rapid expansion of the network place after independence.
AIR today has a network of stations broadcasting mean frequency 237 149 (MW) (54), high-frequency (South West) and 177 transmitters FM. Coverage is 91.85% of the area, serving 99.18% of the population in the largest democracy in the world. AIR covers 24 languages and dialects 146 in domestic services. In services Externel, and covers 27 languages, 17 national and 10 languages.
